If the AI generation API hangs or is extremely slow, requests consume server resources indefinitely. Issue #37 covers retry with backoff but does not enforce an outer timeout boundary, creating a resource exhaustion risk.

Acceptance criteria:

• Add a configurable timeout (default 120s) wrapping all AI generation API calls
• When timeout is hit, abort the request and return HTTP 504 with a user-friendly error message suggesting retry
• Log the timeout event with request ID, document type, and elapsed duration
• Timeout value is configurable via AI_GENERATION_TIMEOUT_MS environment variable
• Add a unit test that verifies timeout behavior with a mock slow response
